The American kestrel is the smallest and most common falcon in North America. By mid-summer, there are an abundance of kestrels nestled in the big cottonwood trees close to my home near North Leigh Creek, hunting small rodents and larger insects like grasshoppers. I decided to continue the predator/mouse theme I had used in “Rustling Leaves” and feature this conspicuous and colorful bird of prey.
Many wildlife sculptures feature just the animal that is the focus of the piece. Although I find those interesting, I prefer to tell more of a story that I could incorporate into the piece. The mouse them came up quickly!
