Pikas are the farmers of the mountains. They spend their summers busily harvesting plants, laying them on rocks in the sun to cure, hurrying to move their hay under rocks if it looks like rain. They then store their cured hay in the spaces beneath large boulders for the winter.
This piece is one of my subtle environmental statements. The bit of melting ice and the calling pika encourages people to think about the change that has been happening for decades. What does the future hold for pikas? What does it hold for all species? I enjoy seeing and hearing these cute little creatures when I am in the mountains.
