Open Wide has an American dipper bringing food to its young. The dipper is one of my favorite birds and is the only aquatic songbird in North America. They live on aquatic insects like caddisfly, mayfly, stonefly, blackfly or dragonfly larvae.
Dippers dive into the water and use their wings to swim. They can swim down to twenty feet or walk along the edge of the stream turning over rocks looking for hiding insects. They have a very large oil gland to waterproof their feathers and, due to the cold water, have more feathers than any other bird.
