Arctic Bound Sculpture
Part of my career was with the National Park Service, working in Grand Teton National Park and was fortunate to have a job that paid me to climb and hike in the mountains. Over the last several summers, I have paddled in the Nunavut Arctic of northern and Alaska. On these trips, I see few if any people in a month-long adventure, but we do see wildlife: caribou, white artic wolves, brown grizzlies, mush oxen and birds.
There is a reason that birds fly thousands of miles to get to the northern breeding grounds. The sun shines 24-hours a day and there is a lot to feed these young birds. A square meter of tundra can contain over a million black flies. These birds grow up and fat quickly!
